Problems in the workplace are becoming increasingly thorny. Too often, leaders rush to solve conflicts, seeking quick solutions to alleviate tension—often at the expense of their own and others’ sovereignty and wholeness. But what if the answer to the problems that arise could be found in the tension? In her book, From Tension to Transformation: A Leader’s Guide to Generative Change, Janet M. Harvey explores the ways in which pausing, reflecting, and exploring the possibilities of our own internal tensions can illuminate new solutions to persistent problems.

As coaches we all accept responsibility for a reflection practice (ICF CC Skill 2.3). There are many methods for reflection. When the focus is on relieving tension – an enduring state in our VUCA & BANI world -- an approach that allows for more expansion discovery benefits coach and client alike. This session introduces a three-part reflection method that accesses the root of tension and generates clarity about how to approach collaboration and restore a positive aspiration to move toward. The session provides time for personal exploration of a current, thorny problem you, and/or your clients face so you can use the Vehicle for Generative Change immediately in your practice.

What you'll learn

Participants will:

  1. Get an understanding about what generative means and how being generative supports moving from tension to transformation in the face of any challenge, and especially thorny problems that seem impossible. [CC#3, #5, #6, #7]
  2. Practice a reflective method called the Vehicle for Generative Change to learn how to deploy this in your client coaching practice and your own personal life. [CC#2, #4, #7, #8]
  3. Expand the scope of reflection activities for self and clients that strengthens ethical quality in your coaching and leadership experiences. [CC#1, #8]
