ICF Credentialing - Your Questions Answered!

The ICF credential journey can seem overwhelming at first glance. Whether you are just starting your coaching journey or looking to advance to the next level, understanding the requirements and process is important! We have put together a few common questions and answers for you!

What are the different ICF credential levels?

  • ACC - Associate Certified Coach: The entry-level credential designated for new coaches who have completed basic training and gained initial coaching experience.
  • PCC - Professional Certified Coach: The intermediate level for coaches who have developed substantial skills and experience in their coaching practice.
  • MCC - Master Certified Coach: The highest individual credential, representing mastery-level coaching skills and extensive experience.

What are the specific requirements for each credential level?

ACC Requirements:

  • Training: 60 hours of coach-specific training from an ICF approved program
  • Experience: 100 hours of client coaching experience (25 hours must be paid)
  • Mentor Coaching: 10 hours with a qualified mentor coach (minimum 3 hours must be individual sessions)
  • Assessment: Pass the ICF ACC Credential Exam or complete a performance evaluation through an ACTP Program

PCC Requirements:

  • Training: 125 hours of coach-specific training
  • Experience: 500 hours of client coaching experience (100 hours must be paid)
  • Mentor Coaching: 10 hours with a qualified mentor coach
  • Assessment: Pass the ICF Credentialing Exam or complete a performance evaluation

MCC Requirements:

  • Training: 200 hours of advanced coach-specific training (beyond PCC level)
  • Experience: 2,500 hours of client coaching experience (2,250 hours must be paid)
  • Mentor Coaching: 10 hours with a qualified MCC mentor coach
  • Assessment: Pass the ICF Credentialing Exam and complete a performance evaluation

What’s the difference between the ICF ACC Exam and the ICF Credentialing Exam?

This is a common source of confusion! The ICF recently introduced a new ACC specific exam:

  • ICF ACC Credential Exam: Designed specifically for ACC candidates, this newer exam format is available for those applying for the ACC credential.
  • ICF Credentialing Exam: The traditional exam used for PCC and MCC candidates. ACC candidates can still choose this exam instead of the ACC-specific exam until March 14, 2025.

Both exams are computer-based and available through Pearson VUE testing centers or online via remote proctoring. A passing score of 460 is required for both exams.

How long does the credentialing process take?

The time line varies depending on several factors including application review and exam scheduling. Overall from start to finish most coaches complete the process within 2-4 months assuming they have all required training and experience hours completed.

How do I maintain my ICF credential?

ICF credentials are valid for three years and must be renewed to maintain active status. Renewal requirements include:

  • Continuing Coach Education (CCE), 40 hours
  • Ongoing Coaching Experience, 100 hours
  • Code of Ethics, annual acknowledgement of ICF’s Code of Ethics

Wondering where to start? What’s your next step?
